Day 14 John 7:28-53

Scripture: John 7:28-53

Read Verses 28-36. Jesus is teaching a crowd, and a debate erupts among the crowd about where Jesus is from. Prophecy says they will not know where the Christ is from, but these Jews have it all figured out and know exactly where Jesus is from; therefore, he can’t be the Christ. What excuses have you heard for not believing that Jesus is the Son of God? Jesus gives the crowd some more hints, but they still just don’t get it. Why do they continue to doubt? However, despite the doubts, verse 31 says that still many put their faith in Him because of the miraculous signs.

Read Verses 37-44. Jesus says in verse 37, “If anyone is thirsty let him come to Me and drink.” Are you thirsty? How do you quench your thirst? Jesus spoke with confidence and authority, like no other the Jews had seen. Some believed just because they heard Him speak truths; no questions asked. Others believed because they saw Him perform miracles. Others could not quiet their questioning minds long enough to believe. Which one are/were you? Jesus says in verse 38, “Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” If as believers we have living water inside us, are we sufficient? Do we need to continue to come to Him and drink after we have received this living water?

Read Verses 45-52. Jesus’ teaching was working on the hearts of the temple guards, enough that they stood up to their Pharisee leaders. The Pharisees’ response is generally that the crowd, guards included, is too stupid and easily persuaded. Have you had to defend your faith to someone who thinks belief in Jesus is a cop out? How about this post that I saw on Facebook last week: “The dumbest state in the U.S. is also the most religious state. Coincidence?” To wrap up Chapter 7, we get a glimpse into Nicodemus’ walk again! This is the man who came to Jesus asking questions under the cover of night. Turns out he’s a Pharisee, and this glimpse indicates God is working on his heart after his encounter with Jesus. Do you know someone in the midst of heart change? So close to taking the leap of faith but just not quite there yet? Please share, and we will pray for him or her! Spoiler alert—stick with John and we’ll get another glimpse into Nicodemus’ walk!

Your streams of living water flow through me, but You want me to continually renew Your supply by coming to You each day. To do Your work impacting others for eternity, You need me centered in Your will.

Continue to help me draw near to You, God, and drink. Please fill me up each day so I can go out and do Your work. Help me to be patient with those whose hearts You’re working on and continue to pray for them.
